A few things Barone doesn't mention that interest me -- Despite his nickname of Silent Cal, that was only so at public functions. He was actually a prolific writer with a penchant for memorable quotes (I read some of his work - you'd be surprised how relevant it is today) and gave long speeches; one of his two sons died while he was in the White House, bringing him unending grief; he ran again in 1932, but came in a poor third to Hoover's renomination. His day was done and he died before he would have taken office again anyway could anyone have beaten Roosevelt. In some senses he was a prototype for the modern small government Republican.
