This is a pretty profound explanation for what it is that draws otherwise intelligent people to such an obviously flawed collection of political and intellectual doctrines. It is a dysfunctional response to stimuli that have little to do with the intellectual basis of the argument. From experience with acquaintances who toe the Dem Party line, it is clear that allegiance to the Party comes before the specific issues involved, that a rationale is being sought for their allegiance rather than a well-thought out position. They put the cart before the horse. I first became aware of the phenomenon when Bill Clinton ran his first Presidential campaign and friends who I would have thought knew better tried to defend their political positions
