Perhaps we're not clear on the difference between self-respect and self-esteem. I've often seen those two used interchangably. The issue is that people who think too highly of themselves tend to be narcissistic and one of the traits of narcissists is caring little for the feelings of others, using others for a selfish end, and not feeling guilt when they've done something wrong. If we teach men and women to think too highly of themselves, that's how they're going to act. And the whole "you're special and entitled" mindset is going to reinforce that notion.
