Keep in mind, had the North not used abolishing of slavery as a tactic for defeating the south, finishing with abolishment of slavery, does not mean that slavery would have carried on well into the 20th century. The US Civil War was the first time that such great violence was used and slavery, as known in the 19th century was then banished, not including uprisings by enslaved people's. In Europe, slavery met it's end by pressure of public will. In Brazil, it too, met it's demise without war.
