How is this the "People's" seat? The purpose of a Senator is to advocate on behalf of the State. Members of the House represent the "People". Granted, since the 17th Amendment leaves the election of Senators up to the People, the State as a sovereign Government with its own interests no longer exists, however, the intended role of a Senator was not to be a voice of he People as much a voice of the State they represented. As repeal is unlikely, perhaps State legislatures could decide who is allowed on a ballot (for the consideration of the people). Since the State Government is elected by the People there would still be checks against candidates while ultimately returning some of the power of a Senator back to the State they represent.
