Only one I know of is the Medal of Honor. At least in the USN, medals give "award points" that figure in enlistment advancement scores up through E-6. E-7 and up (and Os) have selection boards so it's up to how it forms the opinion of any board member. Military folks can tell at a glance what the ribbons stand for. It's sort of like a visual resume. Now the bronze star is really like a service commendation medal given in a combat zone, except if also authorized the "combat distinguishing device" but again, anyone understands the difference.
