The controlled access to the west - which was the next big expansion. Without the war the CSA probably would have become much larger and more powerful than the North. Read the CSA constitution it is not all that different than the US constitution. And yes slavery would have ended in another generation because of automation and the abolitionist movement in the south. you are reading history as a snapshot it is dynamic.
