The sentence "[h]e is only about 5'5"" refers to his present height. See, most languages have these things called "tenses" which indicate relative time. So "I met" occurred in the past; "is only" occurs in the present. Unless you think Mr. Redford has remained 11 years old for rather longer than most of us. Sure, Larry, it was intended as a joke.
