U.S. citizens who go to war zones and take up arms against the United States forfeit their civil liberties and become mere combatants--unlawful combatants in the case of those who join terrorist organizations. Just as we did not extend civil liberties to American citizens serving in the German, Japanese or Italian armed forces (and they numbered in the thousands, thanks to dual citizenship and mandatory conscription), neither do we extend civil liberties to U.S. citizens who choose to become terrorists.
