Before UAW destroyed Detroit, Akron, Ohio led the way in the union devastation of jobs. Goodyear, Goodrich, General Tire, Firestone, Bridgestone, Cooper Tire all left the city beginning in the 70s for either southern right to work states such as Tennessee and North Carolina, or Mexico, as union demands became more and more expensive. But, the free market allows companies to move to states where they can afford to make their products.
