The Chief's viewpoint is skewed by the fact that the purpose of a gun for police is different than it is for the law-abiding public. The job of police is to investigate crime and apprehend criminals. The latter task may involve the use of force with the gun being an important tool. For the law-abiding public a gun is a deterrent to those who would do us harm. Even the most rabid anti-gunner knows it's foolish to advertise their home as gun-free but in California politicians enact 'safe storage' gun laws that have the same effect (see Merced pitchfork murders.) In areas where strict gun controls are in effect violent crime flourishes in direct proportion. It doesn't take a PhD in statistics to figure it out so why, Chief, can't you?
