Lost in the issue is a broader overreach of government. Many gun owners lawfully own firearms that will be outlawed under the new provisions. No laws were violated when they were purchased. If people like myself who own an AR15 legitimately have to surrender a firearm when they have committed no crime we have an 'ex post facto' situation. It's one thing to take away a grandfathered privilege such as factory emissions. There is a provable damage taking place. When no one is being victimized it is no different than forcing antique auto owners to surrender their property because the vehicles they own are illegal to produce by today's codes
