In the 18th and 19th centuries liberty integrated the idea that a free society must be grounded in morality. The 20th century gave way to thinking society can only ultimately promise freedom from oppression and that society should largely be silent on what people should do with their freedom. Liberals make an exception when we use our freedom to include the existence of any such thing as a right answer or a right way to behave. We are told to "check your morality at the door." Downton Abbey challenges liberal egalitarian sensibility and makes them uncomfortable, ergo the reaction.
