One of the interesting parts of this story that gets little attention is that the siege on the place Dorner was holed up in was ended by burning him out, with the fire having been started "accidentally" by a tear gas canister. This is a common strategy, because it makes good sense: why risk anyone by trying to assault a position when you can start a fire instead. It was used at Waco too. And I believe it was also used to end a siege against members of the SLA (though Patty Hearst was not part of that fight).
