A way that public officials and religious organizations might treat same-sex "marriage" without violating their consciences is to recognize that CIVIL marriage is not a sacrament tied to the historical significance of marriage, but merely a civil act no different than obtaining a driver license, business license or birth certificate. Public officials would eliminate all the symbolism, ceremony and celebration associated with real marriage, and simply affix the necessary signatures, stamps and seals required for all civil acts, and go about their business. Because, that is what same-sex marriage would do to civil marriage: make it nothing special or of any more significance than any other civil act.
