Just because you have never seen a person with Down's be self-sufficient doesn't mean he doesn't exist. I knew a man who worked at a grocery store and was completely self-sufficient, he lived on his own, supported himself and was quite proud of that. He didn't require a "keeper". Part of the problem is the mentally retarded are treated as pariahs. People see a man with Down's and think they are stupid and won't hire them. It is not their fault society is bigoted. If the mentally retarded were allowed to go to special schools that taught them to live with their handicap and work with it, it would not longer be handicap; there would be less need to support them.
