It's clear that most societies collapse when Atlas Shrugs: that is, when too many parasites are living at the expense of the industrious, eventually you reach a critical mass when the industrious are no longer willing to be exploited. When Roman law protected property rights at a reasonable cost, Rome prospered. When it looted property and offered little of value in return, its support crumbled. The "barbarians" didn't defeat the Roman legions so much as they simply moved in to the vacuum created as Rome collapsed from within.
