Also, notice that in every election pre 1964 deep southern states tended to vote in bloc for either the Democratic party or a third party Dixiecrat going back to 1876. In 1968 this flip dramatically with the Democratic party, for the first time in its history, being completely stoned out of electoral college votes in the deep south and this is despite it being a competitive race. You get a momentary swing back in '76 with Carter, running on the Nixon scandal. That is the last time a Dem wins a majority in the deep south.
