Several decades ago, I read an article by a nun who was advocating nutritional programs for poor, pregnant women. Her thesis was that "poverty begets poverty." In that the developing unborn infant who does not get good nutrition will suffer from minute brain damage, which then leads to a lack of initiative--completing the cycle of being unable to lift oneself out of poverty. Feeding pregnant women seems a lot simplier, and more humane, than "alteration of genetic makeup."
