"Raping the young and innocent"...at half the rate of the general population, even at the height of the abuse. It's gone way down since. Generalizations are suspect even when you AREN'T obviously ignorant of the relevant stats.
The real scandal, in a species with a sense of proportion, would've been "Children are twice as safe with unmarried men who are not their relatives as they are with their mother's husbands or boyfriends"—40% of all sex-abuse is by fathers, stepfathers, or mothers' boyfriends.
That some bishops covered for abusers and thought they were cured, is a disgrace to the church. The abuse itself only disgraces the individual culprits.
