Reagan was never beloved by the GOP party elites. Because of his popularity, they have not been averse to invoking his name when it suits their purposes. Gingrich, in many substantive ways, was the successor to Reagan. The GOP was more than happy to help the Democrats destroy him. He'd no sooner resigned than the GOP Congress and President began big-time spending once again. The final nail in the Reagan/Gingrich coffin was the filthy primary campaign waged by Romney and the GOP elite in which well-known "conservative" media actually gave Clinton all the credit for the balanced budgets and welfare reform of the 90s. Let's not credit the Liberals for destroying the Reagan legacy: t he GOP was the culprit.
