They did not commit idolatry, Mike, they took the name of the Lord in vain.
This commandment is not about cussin' and swearin'. What it says in the original Hebrew is "thou shalt not carry the name of the Lord it vain". It means not to use the name of God to justify your own agenda, especially when that agenda conflicts with God's Word.
Taking a Bible verse out of context like they do is a prime example of this, as was that "pastor's" use of tithing to justify stiffing that poor waitress at Applebee's last week.
