Your reasoning is valid but you are leaving an important part of the equation out of your discussion; there is a limit on sales for this R&D cost and sales don't come close to showing break even much less a profit. The question is really how much GM [IE taxpayers] will lose from the sale of the Volt. Unless Volt becomes immensely more popular there will be a loss with each car sold therefore it is not a profitable car.
