Actually, Dumbo, the median does NOT "tell you how most people did." Instead, it reveals only a result exceeded by 50% of the sample, and in excess of the other 50%'s result.
Example for the statistically ignorant, like Dumbo:
Assume a sample size of 10 households. Assume a median income of $100.00.
One possible meaning: 5 households made $15.93 Billion each. 5 households made $0.01 each.
A second possible meaning: 5 households made $99.99 each. 5 households made $100.01 each.
In short, the median, by itself, does NOT "...tell you how most people did..."
