Goldberg is wrong. So are the others who objected to his column.
Repubs failed to beat BO and BO had long coattails. But Repubs dominate in the state houses. Given that, it is not obviously a problem with the Repub "brand."
Repubs could learn from the Dims: when they run a candidate with high public charisma (BO, Slick Willie), they win. When they run a candidate with low or negative charisma (pompous scold Jimmuh, W. Mon-dull, nerd extraordinaire Dukakis, bloated gasbag Algore, snobby Jean-Francois Kerree) they LOSE. The same is true with the Repubs.
It is charisma, not mushy moderation, that wins the "undecideds," and especially the young, and takes the presidency. See, e.g., Ronald Reagan.
