Ataturk cancelled the Caliphate, changed the language and jerked 7th century Turkey into the modern world ca 1915. Now Erdogan is dragging Turkey back into Islam but the process started back in the 60's. Turkey was never a good prospect to become westernized but it may still join the EU when it becomes Islamized. Turkey never has been nor will it ever be a friend to western civilization.
