Education is a catch-all word that has gained sacred status.
Any given person will do better in the US if said person is able to read and write, reason and perform arithmetic. But at a certain point there are diminishing returns to education. Egyptology is cool stuff. But it turns out that rather few Egyptologists are able to work in their field. Most of those that do work in universities...teaching more Egyptologists.
Colleges and universities create ever more majors in areas with no function in the world. This is not to say that no one should major in, for example, leisure studies, but rather to say that after spending four years in college and racking up X amount of debt a person with such an education is four years late to the job>
