Some people used to observe December 25th as a heathen solstice that was loathsome to Christians. The Church community eventually transformed a heathen celebration into wonderful Holy Day. The National Anthem is a great song that Hendrix may have tried to desecrate, but when a patriot like Nugent performs it the song is transformed.
