Back in the '60s, my dad presented plans for converting car haulers with hydraulic ramps on the trailer and a ramp over the cab, allowing them to load more cars per truck. The company didn't go for it, and continued dispatching trucks as usual. Then, on a trip out to Montana from Minnesota, his truck broke down and was awaiting parts. He handed the garage mechanic his drawings and before he returned to the home terminal, he had his truck modified. This ticked off the unions, because it meant more cars hauled with fewer dispatches, but the company nonetheless gave Dad all the longest routes in order to save money. It wasn't until the first Oil Crisis in 1973 that the company converted all of its trucks to save money.
