While the NRA is the most widely-known pro-gun organization, it is not gunners' best friend. I dropped my membership years ago, when NRA was supporting CARA, supposedly to open up more land to hunting and fishing. But it would have done just the opposite, since the government's buying up private acreages (where most owners allowed hunting and shooting) and giving it to The Nature Conservancy (famous for closing up their lands except to educational visits) would result in a net loss of dollars and a net loss of open hunting and shooting opportunities. Other gun organizations, like NAGR, CCRKBA, and SAF agreed with me and did not support CARA. To top that off, NRA donates money (your dues, members) to Democrats as well as to Republicans.
