So, obviously the stat left out here is how often those self professed "moderates" or "independents" vote with one party or the other --the implication being that for the above to be true, and for voting patterns to play out the way they have, it is far more common for those independent-minded voters to align with Democrats over Republicans. Look at the extreme rhetoric for the answer to why that's true. Conservatives don't even want other "Republicans in name only," while Democrats try to attract as large a coalition as possible. If conservatives stopped calling everyone whiners and takers for two seconds, maybe some independent voters would break their way.
