GDP includes government spending, several measures of inflation produce politically useful results, borrowing from the Social Security Trust Fund helps us reduce the "deficit" (even to eliminate it in Clinton's day, although the debt somehow continued to rise during that period of budget "surplus"!), reductions in baseline increases are called "cuts" in spending, and even as everybody enjoys a standard of living that includes automobiles, air conditioning, obesity levels of food consumption, ubiquitous "Obamaphones," etc., poverty and hunger are said to be problems.
