jessierandall, I would hardly call the ACLU a conservative group. They were at the forefront of changing the involuntary commitment laws as part of the civil rights movement. Today, when I finally obtain my license as a clinical psychologist, I cannot involuntarily commit anyone unless they give me a specific target, a specific method of committing the crime, and a specific time and place. If they don't give me that, I can't commit them no matter how dangerous I think they may be, and even if I could commit them, they cannot be held for more than 72 hours in most cases for evaluation. That's it. They are call Tarasoff or duty to protect laws and every state has a variation of them.
