We want less smoking and drinking so we tax tobacco and alcohol. Do we really want to discourage income by taxing income? The more you earn the more you pay. Nobody is forced to consume more than what is needed for basic necessities and with the Fair Tax those basic necessities are not taxed out of the consumer's pocket. If a poor person buys a used car or used home, they are not taxed. If one can afford to buy new goods they will pay the sales tax out of their own pocket. Under the Fair Tax we will all take home 100% of what we earned but it will be up to each of us how we spend our earnings.
