If the Italian, Irish, Norwegian, German... migration waves happened when there was a generous welfare state, huge percentages of those immigrants and their descendants would have gotten sucked into the corrosive trap of government assistance. Previous waves of immigrants (before the welfare state) took 2 or 3 generations for the immigrants to blend into society and become economically identical to the people of English colonial decent. Who knows how long it will take, if ever, for immigrants to overcome government assistance and become economically assimilated? How will large numbers of people dependent on government assistance vote (scary)?
