As of 2000 it costs $500m to bring a new drug to market. Of the roughly new 5000 compounds (drugs) discovered in a year 2.5 make it to market. Today of course the costs have doubled. That is do in large part to the medical establishment. In 2000 a pharmaceutical company would pay a physician 50k per patient participating in a clinical trial study. Imagine what that is today? Medical inflation is killing this country and no one seems to know how to reign it in.
