I've seen a quiet explosion of homeschooling in my semi-rural area. For 99% of the students it has worked out terrific. These kids are the most polite and well-spoken children one could hope to meet. The standardized test scores (yes homeschooler parents sign their kids up for these) are off the chart. The parents and kids work together in organized groups for lessons, activities, and events. And here's the kicker: The parents of the kids say they MIGHT spend 4 hours a day teaching.
