I would have agreed with Hewitt if he had made his suggestion in 1993. However, we now have people who have been living here for decades who have NO legal rights. Since the Bush Sr. - Clinton - Bush Jr. adminstrations declined to deport the immigrants, but were OK with their campaign contributors underpaying the immigrants for the work the immigrants performed, America has implicitly accepted the immigrants as valid and should figure out a pathway to FULL citizenship (which includes voting rights). The Republicans, in this and in other ways, are signalling that THEY believe that the only way Republicans can win future elections is by restricting the right to vote to people who are likely to vote Republican.
