Ann, good article as always. I agree that the way to solve the mass shootings problem is not with any type of gun control legislation.
However, I am far less optimistic that there is any coherent idea of how to tackle the mental illness epidemic. As you noted in your example of the mentally ill woman - heroin was not a minor part of that problem. It isn't like saying she started smoking her Marlboros again.
I have the strong sense that the nation has pretty much given up on the idea of handling drug and alcohol addiction. I firmly believe that more violent death (and mental illness) issue from these problems than from all the people defecating on and talking to themselves. And the medical profession cannot help with these.
