In case anyone wondered, the reason they're not supposed to give any context is because of Derrida's idea of "The Death of the Author". Basically, whatever you feel like a work says, that's what it says, without reference to what the author actually meant. Of course, this raises the question, "What about translation? Any work in a language I don't speak doesn't mean anything, and since what the source actually meant is irrelevant, there's no such thing as a bad translation."
