That ideal doesn't even exist in "free" countries, and, as you know, the U.S. is no longer among the most free, but has slipped behind Singapore, Switzerland, New Zealand and Australia, and others. So your economist friends are having trouble discerning the forest because of their focus on the all too numerous trees.
