Not all that is called socially conservative is truly socially conservative. The so-called " War on Drugs" is a perfect example. Social conservatives believe that that there are certain values and begaviors which, when widely empraced by a society, have been shown throughout the centuries to be beneficial and others that have similarly been shown to be harmful. Drug abuse has been widely recognized, across both time and culture, to be harmful. It it, therefore, to be discouraged. It does not follow, however, that the "War on Drugs" as we know it is the only socially conservative approach to dealing with the problem. Any policy striving to reduce drug abuse can rightly be called socially conservative.
