Marie...those that are libertarian might advance the idea that Natural Law and Stoicism are the predecessors to the principles espoused in the Declaration, and that although Natural Law is not derivative of God's law via religious practice, that a moral underpinning necessary for the advance of a free people can be found there. Their brand of social conservatism, one that is moral and just, can exist outside of God's teachings and is in consonance with a conservative's opposition to modern maladies such as abortion. Remember, "these truths are self-evident" in the Declaration is an acknowledgment of the influence of Natural Law in the formation of our country, just as "endowed by their creator" indicates God's influence in our founding.
