Those who use models recognize that they are not perfect. Still, it is worth comparing model outputs to empirical data. Real Climate does this yearly. Here is there 2010 post http://www.realclimate.org/index.php/archives/2011/01/2010-updates-to-model-data-comparisons/ You will see that the models do pretty well, even the early Hansen model, crude as it was in 1988 has done a pretty good job against the data.
