I don't have a problem with a background check. Anyone should be able to own a firearm of any sort provided they haven't been convicted of a felony. The card should be given to all when they register to vote and rescinded only upon conviction. As for mental health checks, this is going to take some reasoned work and discussion. In the mean time Judges can rule on an individual basis. In each of the recent cases, none of the shooters had legal access to firearms as it should be. However, wholesale denial will result in fewer people seeking help. IIRC correctly, if a patient makes a threatening statement towards an individual, the provider is exempt from client privilege litigation.
