Read up on SGT Alvin C. York, conscientious objector in WWI until he had an extended conversation with Capt. Danforth, his C.O. They traded Biblical citations on this very issue, and then York was given leave to go home to his Tennessee hills and think about it all. He came back, shouldered his rifle, and went overseas with the 82nd Division and on to win the Medal of Honor. General Pershing later named him the outstanding draftee in the AEF during the war.
