When I was growing up in the 40's and 50's homicides and other crime rates were low, and very few young males belonged to gangs. What happened? In the 60's we saw the rise of welfare, drugs, and illegitimate births. Boys without fathers drifted into gangs and became feral predators. In my opinion the single greatest societal problem is single motherhood subsidized by welfare.
