I would hope that the "soup kitchen" stigma doesn't take over as a sole stereotype of people who are on EBT/food stamps. I''m 63, newly retired - forced out of a job at a state college by harassment from a vicious union steward and a totally ineffective department head. I had to cash out my pension to survive the two years till I could start social security. I haven't been able to find a job of any kind at my age. I qualified for food stamps. They take up the slack in my meager budget - if I didn't have them I wouldn't be eating, frankly. That's how much the rent and other unavoidable expenses take up. I don't use the funds for anything but food. So not everyone is guzzling at the food-trough of government handouts.
