So, everybody with an agenda is out to scare us with falsehoods and exaggerations (also called hyperbole and demagoguery). Fine. That means the effective attitude is the one embraced by Alfred E. Neuman.
What? Me Worry?
I don't think so. We now face this danger: that we really need to know what's going on, what the raw facts are, and take intelligent action. But we're being conditioned to complacency by endless overreaction.
