Though I agree that an atheistic point of view offers far less consolation than a belief in an afterlife, I don't agree with the crux of your argument that if an atheist is to rely on intelligence they should believe in the afterlife. I believe an atheist would say, "my intellectual observations would lead me to conclude there is no afterlife, and yes there is consolation in this, your child is no longer suffering as the world tends to bring on all of us, and your child now lives in you as a memory, make her legacy bring about less suffering in this world."
